The LifE Principles
Provide space for the river
Create areas that flood, to compensate for any loss of floodplain, and direct floodwater away from homes. Protect the natural floodplain, where possible. Provide space for rain Create areas that slow and store rain water out of the floodplain to reduce surface water run off rates to at least equivalent to greenfield rates. Create space for amenity Locate play and recreation areas in areas designed to flood. Use permeable surfaces to reduce run off and help prevent water logging. |
Integrate with community needs
Plan proposals that could complement the area through provision of amenities and services that are lacking. Design to be adaptable Identify space to accommodate more frequent and higher volume floods in the future. Allow for retrofitting of resilience measures and new renewable technologies. Reduce car dependency Design layouts to encourage walking and cycling, establish car clubs on site to reduce car ownership to 1 car per 20 people. Provide space for energy Orientate roofs to the south for solar panels and make space within development site for wind turbines where possible. Provide backups Design failsafe mechanisms, such as ‘safe haven buildings’ that are built to a higher resilience standard to provide sanctuary. |
